2010-06-10
Determined to save lives and end breast cancer forever, the Southern Nevada Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded local grants totaling $675,000 to programs providing breast cancer services in the Las Vegas area.
Organizations receiving grants included:
St. Rose Dominican Hospitals’ R.E.D.
(Responsible Early Detection) Rose
program provides free breast cancer
services to individuals under age 50 who
lack health care coverage or financial
means.
The Center for Compassionate Care provides
counseling and support services for women,
men and children affected by breast cancer,
either directly or indirectly.
Great Basin Primary Care Association of
Nevada has established a Patient Care Fund
for assisting with the cost of breast cancer
treatment services for qualified, uninsured
women. In partnership with Susan G. Komen
for the Cure, local treatment providers, and other agencies, a functional program has
been created to assist many early-stage breast cancer patients.
“To meet needs we have discovered right here in our community, this year’s grant slate specifically expands the availability of breast cancer screening, diagnostic and treatment resources for uninsured women,” said Dr. James Sanchez, Grants Chair of the Affiliate. In 2010, Komen Southern Nevada is providing funding to assist with a range of breast cancer needs including mammography, breast ultrasounds, biopsies, surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation treatments, bras and prosthetics, support groups, counseling services, and financial needs of breast cancer patients.
The Komen Southern Nevada Affiliate is part of the 125-Affiliate network of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer forever. The Affiliates are the face and voice of Komen for the Cure’s global breast cancer movement in communities around the world. Through local events and activities, the Komen Southern Nevada Affiliate mobilizes and educates thousands of community members while raising funds to support community-based breast cancer programs.
In order to ensure it is funding programs that address the specific unmet breast cancer needs of the community, Komen Southern Nevada works with local health care professionals and community leaders to conduct a comprehensive community needs assessment. This community profile, a standard practice of all Komen Affiliates, is then used to establish a local grant application and review process consistent with the organization’s standards and mission.
